River Engineering Department

  • River Engineering Department focuses on the scientific and engineering aspects of managing and manipulating river systems, addressing challenges related to flood control, navigation, erosion, water resources, and environmental sustainability. This multidisciplinary field integrates hydrology, hydraulics, geomorphology, and ecology to design, construct, and maintain infrastructure like dams, levees, and river training works.
  • This department also conduct research on river processes and sediment transport; implement river restoration projects; and assess the environmental impacts of human interventions on river systems, ultimately aiming to balance human needs with the protection and preservation of these vital natural resources.

Area of Expertise

Navigation Waterway
Navigation Waterway Planning

Ensuring the safety of navigation: This involves maintaining waterways to be free of bottlenecks, providing aids to navigation (such as buoys and lights), and enforcing regulations.

Navigation Waterway
Flood Risk Maps

Developing flood maps that show the extent and depth of potential flooding under different flow scenarios using numerical modeling.
Using this information for land-use planning and development regulations to prevent construction in high-risk areas

Navigation Waterway
Hydraulic Structures

Evaluating the effects of hydraulic structures (dams, barrages, bridges, etc.) on the Nile River, including changes on its morphology, sediment transport dynamics, and long-term hydrological and hydraulic characteristics.

Navigation Waterway
Water Supply

Providing solutions for sedimentation problems in front of Intakes to Ensure sustainable water supply for communities , agricultural sector, and industrial sector.

Moreover, predicting the impact of water withdrawal from water stations on the Nile River morphology and sediment transport.

Navigation Waterway
River Islands Development

Creating sustainable and thriving communities along rivers, balancing economic growth with environmental protection and community well-being.
Encompassing planning, design, construction, and management, while potential challenges include environmental impact mitigation, social integration, economic viability, and navigating regulatory hurdles.
